Pain Relief Ireland are delighted to announce the appointment of Prof Dominic Hegarty by UCC School of Medicine to the position of Professor in Pain Medicine.

Prof Hegarty spoke with the Medical Independent (MI) about his new appointment, the complexities of pain management, and the current landscape for pain medicine in Ireland.

Diabetic neuropathy (DN) represents a common, disabling and, until recently, largely neglected problem affecting approximately 50% of patients with diabetes at some point. According to the International Diabetes Federation, 425 million people world-wide aged 20 years had diabetes in 2017, and this number is expected to increase to 629 million by 2045. Approximately one in 3 people with diabetes experience painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN).

Congratulations to Dr. Dominic Hegarty (Clinical Director of Pain Relief Ireland), who gave a presentation on the issues surrounding the management of musculoskeletal pain (MSK) and what the best treatment options are. Dr. Hegarty was one of several consultants who presented the webinar. It was chaired by Sr. S. Rathi (GP, Cork) Dr. E Byrne (GP, Dublin) and hosted by the Mater Private Network had over 250 delegates registered.
